The Faux Fur Accessories Pattern

This pattern evolved while pondering what to do with the offcuts from sampling The Faux Fur Jacket.
First came the hat: a friend of mine at college used to make fur hats as a side line. This simple pull on accessory was influenced by her hats, it adds glamour to any outfit and instant warmth on a cold day.

It is important to choose a faux fur that is soft and will not irritate the skin, as it sits on the forehead. The depth of the brim could be extended for a more dramatic look.

The faux fur collar came next. This is so simple to make it hardly requires a pattern but the finished item is so effective.

Of the five styles in this pattern, the collar makes an ideal present as one size fits all. Finish with a simple tie or ribbon for the prettiest effect.

The bag is influenced by the current slouchy bag shape that is everywhere. I first tried it with a zip closure however zips and faux fur do not work well together! A magnetic clasp is better although a large snap fastener would also do the job.

A faux fur bag is a great way to experiment with the faux fur trend without investing too heavily and this one can be sized up or down as required.

I had taken the hat, collar and bag samples along to a recent Faux Fur Jacket workshop we ran at Claire Tyler’s sewing rooms. I wanted to gauge reaction and the next two styles came about from other people’s suggestions.

The headband is similar to one that Claire owns.

I used as wide elastic as is easy to find, however narrower elastic would work though tapper the pattern piece to suit.

A couple of people said they would like a faux fur Gilet. I realised that with some modifications, the Quilted Gilet from Issue 10 of the magazine could translate well into faux fur. The body is cut in one single piece as is the lining, and the whole garment is bagged out so the Gilet has a clean finish.

The centre front is fastened with a hook and eye fastener but again, a snap popper would also work.

The five separate styles are all suitable for a confident beginner, but do read the tips at the begging of the pattern, sewing with faux fur can be tricky though the results are very rewarding.
