The Faux Fur Jacket
A faux fur jacket is a key piece for this autumn winter and this pattern has been designed especially for faux fur.
This pared back boxy shape comes with a choice of two collars: notch or shawl collar, and both styles have inseam pockets. But beyond that, all unnecessary seams have been removed, so the front and front facing are cut as one.
This style showcases faux fur fabric. For ease chose a medium weight faux fur fabric that will hold the style. Some of the lighter weight varieties can be too soft and will look more like a cardigan when made up.
When buying faux fur fabrics it is best to purchase from a store where you can see how the fabric hangs and how it feels. If buying online always, always, always, get a sample first, to avoid disappointment and expensive mistakes.
Working with faux fur is tricky so here are some key tips: -
All faux furs will shed hairs and fibres during the cutting out process.
Use a brush, comb or lint roller to collect the loose hairs from all cut edges.
Place the pattern pieces on the reverse of the fabric and carefully draw around the pattern pieces with tailors’ chalk or a pen.
Make sure the fur is in the correct direction before cutting.
The pile should run down the garment.
Mark the notches with tailor’s chalk or a pen on the backing fabric.
Use scissors to carefully cut through the backing fabric, taking small snips try to avoid cutting as much of the pile as possible.
Use Wonder Clips, rather than pins, if you have them.
Use a ballpoint needle and lengthen the sewing stitch on your machine.
Test this on your fabric off-cuts to perfect.
After stitching each seam, comb or brush the pile on the right side, to release any caught fur – this will help hide the seams.
On the wrong side, trim the fur form the seam allowance to remove any excess bulk.
Do not press faux fur fabric, the heat will flatten the pile.
