Behind the design - The Lounge Pant
10th September 2020

At the height of the pandemic confined to home except for brief periods of exercise, I felt less restrictive clothes were called for.

I wanted to design a trouser that was casual and relaxed but still had some style. There has been a move by some designers to lower the crotch on trousers and joggers and I liked this idea. It felt right to ease the fit in this area when much of the time we are seated or lounging around - hence the name.

The woven version is flat fronted with a zip and fly fastening and side pockets. The back also has pockets and darts to enhance the shape. The leg of the trouser is slightly tapered and finishes just below the calf.

The jersey version is a reworking of a classic jogger style taking the same dropped crotch idea as the woven trouser. Finished with an elasticated waist and hem cuffs it is a really easy wear and easy to make style.

The samples shown here and on the pattern page include woven examples in linen and cotton drill but any trouser weight fabric would work.

The jersey jogger suits most mid weight jersey constructions; avoid too light a weight single jersey as this style needs a bit of body. Heavier single jersey fabrics, interlock or double knits are ideal. For the cooler days ahead try a loop back or lightly brushed jersey. Cotton and cotton blends with viscose or polyester are all suitable. As this is a loose style the addition of Lycra or elastane isn't totally necessary however it will prevent the jogger from bagging at the knee or seat.
