The Sport-Luxe Collection

Sport-Luxe Trend

At this time of year there’s a wonderful feeling of anticipation as we near the party season. So knowing we would be showing at the recent Selvedge Winter Fair, I decided to put together a real Sport-Luxe capsule collection with plenty of sparkle and shine.

Sport-Luxe fabrics

There are some gorgeous fabrics to be found at both Cloth House and Ditto that work this trend beautifully. I selected a range of Nude to Oyster coloured fabrics in a range of satins and sequins for my capsule collection.

Satin Bomber Jacket

For a while now I had been wanting an excuse to recreate the Sport-Luxe Bomber Jacket in a truly Luxe fabric and what better than in a crepe-backed satin; great drape for this bat-wing style. I’ve trimmed the satin with a coordinating smooth, Lycra jersey for the hem, cuffs and collar. I’ve buttoned through the front from the neck to just above the hem welt – I like to leave this splayed open, as it’s more flattering.

Sequinned Skirt

Next I made The Ultimate Pencil Skirt in a shimmering, stretch, sequined fabric.

Sewing with sequinned fabric

When sewing with sequined fabrics you do not want the sequins on the inside of the garment, as they can snag underwear and scratch skin. So once the garment pieces are cut out, snip off any sequins between the fabric edge and the stitch-line all around the garment; on the side seams, hem and waistband. Once I’d done this I made up the skirt as normal, turned it out and slipped it on – very “Marilyn” - perfect!

Sequinned Shell Top

In fact so perfect, I made the same skirt with The Shell Top, as a present for a friend’s VIP birthday. If you want to make the Shell top in a similar fabric just add a 5mm seam allowance to enable you to turn back the edges – see above. Remember to snip back the sequins here too.

Sequinned Shell Top

To add in a slightly more feminine look I’ve made The Drawstring-neck top in a fluid, lighter weight satin, trimmed with a silver drawstring. This works well with a version of The Ultimate Pencil made in a heavier stretch satin. And finally The Drawstring-neck Dress in a silky jersey to be shown with a thick felted wool version of The Unlined Raw-edged Coat.

There you have it a capsule collection of easy sportswear separates in luxurious evening wear fabrics suitable to wear from day to night.
