A dress variation of The Pull-on Shirt

This dress version of The Pull-on Shirt is featured in the ‘Laundered’ fashion story from the Summer 21 magazine.

As with a lot of shirt styles, the length can be altered to tunic or dress length. For this dress, the front and back pattern pieces were lengthened by 54cm so the style finishes just below the knee. The hem has been finished with the same split hem feature as the shirt, but with a slightly deeper hem of 7cm.

The sleeves have been shortened to sit just below the elbow and finished with a turned cuff. To do this fold back the sleeve pattern piece by 20cm before cutting the sleeves. Once the underarm seam is stitched, turn up the cuff by 10cm and stitch in place, then fold the cuff over by 7cm and press. The turned cuff can be secured with a couple of stitches at the underarm seam.

In-seam pockets have also been added – see the illustration for the pocket dimensions, cut two pairs. Before stitching the underarm and side seam, attach a pocket piece to each side of the front and back, 20 cm down from the underarm. Press the seam allowance away from the garment. Once the side seam is stitched, snip the back seam allowance above and below the pocket to allow the pocket to be pressed forward.
