Pattern variation
A ribbon trimmed tracksuit
Here's a great sportswear update - perfect for following up on those New Year's resolutions! A ribbon trimmed tracksuit made using the Two Contemporary Sweatshirts pattern and a variation of The Wide-legged Trouser pattern.
The main fabric is a loop-back cotton jersey dyed bottle green. The trim isn't matching but coordinates. The trim is added to the overarm from neck to hem and down the outside leg.
To get the placement of the ribbon correct chalk a line down the garment pieces. On the sleeves this is half way between back and front as shown in the first illustration.
The tracksuit bottom leg pattern is made in the same way as the pyjama bottom from this Journal post. By eradicating the side seam it is easier to apply the ribbon in a straight line. Once you have cut out the trouser legs, chalk the line where the seam would have been, as shown in the second illustration. Then lay the ribbon over the chalk line and stitch either side of the ribbon. It's worth testing this on an off cut of fabric first, to get the tension right and avoid puckering ribbon or fabric.
Cuffed ankles are coming back on trend so a loosely gathered cuff has been added here. The finished width is 20 cm/ 8" or 40cm/16" in circumference. Gathered but not tight to the ankle.
The finished tracksuit is perfect for those new year's resolutions of getting into shape but also very comfortable to wear just sitting around!
