A Sheer Slip Dress

Sheer is a key trend for autumn but it is a difficult look to pull off. However, when I found this silk organza I thought I would experiment with a sheer over-layer to the Slip Dress.

When sewing with sheer fabrics the seams have to be near perfect as they show through. I chose to use French seams so that the raw edges are neatly enclosed. It’s worth practicing the width and type of seam, to perfect the finished look, before starting on the main garment.

With the Slip Dress design, the bodice has two layers so that it can be neatly bagged out around the neck and armholes. Having these two layers doesn’t work in a sheer dress and as I had chosen to do a V-neck, to get around how to achieve a neat V at the neck, I added a central seam down the front.

To compliment the French seams, I also stitched down the darts. The neckline armholes and hem edges were all turned twice and stitched down. The finished effect is almost like an x-ray of the garment construction.
