Adding a trim to The Contemporary Sweatshirt

For the first style this is the Contemporary Sweatshirt in classic grey marl jersey trimmed with silver metallic braid has an added neck detail and turned cuffs.

Start with the neck detail - cut a triangular shape in self fabric and stitch to the centre front using a a twin-needle.

On each sleeve piece chalk a central line from neck to cuff. Take the braid and starting at the neck place the braid over the chalked line, tack in place. Carefully stitch down either side of the braid without stretching braid or fabric – practice on off cuts first to get the tension perfect. For the folded back cuff, stop the underarm seam just above the fold line of the cuff – turn the garment through and stitch the remaining seam wrong sides together so the seam is to the right side. This way once the cuff is turned the seam will still look neat when worn.

For this second version of the Contemporary Sweatshirt, the cuffs and hem have been gathered using an elasticated sequin trim. Adjust the length of sleeves and body, allowing for the depth of cuff trim plus a couple of centimetres to allow the finished garment to bag out. Measure the finished lengths needed for the sequin approximately 20 cm for each cuff and your hip measurement plus seam allowance. Before stitching the side and underarm seams, gather each cuff to the length of the trim, with right sides together stitch the cuff to the sleeve using a zigzag or stretch stitch. Sew one side seam, then do the same with the hem. Complete by stitching the other side seam.
