Adding curved shirt tails to The Oversized Shirtdress

Curved hems are back on the style radar, as is the oversized trend, so this variation of The Oversized Shirt Dress ticks all the boxes for a stylish summer – here’s how to achieve it.

Take the pattern pieces and trace off the shape, straightening the side seams as shown.

Now add the curved hem extension: for ease use the Summer Top pattern from the Summer 22 magazine to create the curve. There is a 1cm indentation from the side seam to the start of the curve – this allows the hem to be finished with bias binding. Follow the instructions for making the shirt until the side seams.

Before stitching the side seams take a strip of bias binding, place 1cm above the indent on the right side of the fabric (1). Open out one edge and stitch in place 1cm from the end following the curve (2). Press over to the wrong side and stitch in place again 1cm from the end (3). Stitch the side seam down to the indentation, keeping the end of bias binding out of the way. Now press the seam allowance open to cover the ends of the bias binding and stitch across the top several times to secure (4). 

This version also has a turned cuff, for this the sleeves were extended by 12cm to allow for the deep sleeve hem that is then turned. The buttons and button holes were taken all the way to the top of the placket, although it is worn open in the other images.

This variation takes an extra 0.5m of fabric.
