Lining The Classic Coat

Lining a coat is tricky so here are some additional tips and images for inserting the lining into The Classic Coat. As the coat can be quite heavy, I do this in sections, starting with the back neck.

Lay the outer coat flat with the collar towards you.

Pin the back neck of the lining to the edge of the top collar only. Stitch this in place starting 1cm in, as indicated by the X above.

Next pin the lining to the top section of the facing only - at the left and right shoulder. Stitch in place.

Then pin the left hand front edge of the lining to the facing and stitch in place.

Repeat with the right hand side.

Turn the lining and coat through so that the right side is outermost. There will be a small section where the facing and collar meet where the lining will need hand stitching in place. At this stage the coat should be hung up and left for the fabrics to ‘drop’. The outer fabric may well lengthen compared to the lining as the weave and weight will have a different effect to the lining. Once the fabrics have dropped, try on your coat to check the length and pin up the outer hem and press in place. Do the same to the lining. Once step 8e from the instruction sheet has been completed, pin the lining to the outer so that it ‘bags’ slightly. This will ensure the lining does not pull on coat when worn.

Do the same with the sleeves. Give the garment a final press.
