Lining The Woven Ultimate Pencil Skirt

There are several ways to line the woven version of The Pencil Skirt depending on the outer fabric. If it is loosely woven like a Linton tweed, I would suggest underlining. However, for a more densely woven fabric, this is how I lined the Ultimate Pencil Skirt.

To create the lining pattern, I took the back pattern piece and folded the pleat section back in line with the edge of the pattern piece: the red line in Step A. Then draw a line at the edge of the folded section and 1cm down from the top as shown in red – Step B.

In Step C the new pattern piece becomes the right hand side of the back lining. The left hand side is left as the original pattern. The front lining piece is also the same as the original pattern. I decided to lengthen the pencil skirt by 5cm, this I added to the outer fabric not the lining.

I made up the outer of the pencil skirt, in this version I used an invisible zip. At the back vent, I stitched the top of the vent only. Then I made up the lining, again only stitching across the top of the vent. With wrong sides together, I slipped the lining up over the outer skirt and tucked the top edge under the waist band and hand stitched in place and around the zipper. After checking the length, I pressed up the outer and the lining accordingly. I also pressed the vent edges of both the outer and lining in by 1cm. Pin the lining in place with the cut away right hand lining piece tucking behind the folded over vent of the outer skirt. Hand stitch the hem and back vent. Press the whole skirt. Then finally lift the under vent out of the way to machine stitch the top of the vent in place.
