Mud Cloth Coat

The Spring 21 magazine features a coat made in mud cloth from Cloth House. The pattern I used is The Raw-edged Coat from my book.

I choose the coat version with revers even though I still wanted raw edges. There is a real textural quality to the fabric and an appearance of frayed edges adds to that. Once the collar and revers were stitched in place, I stitched a line 0.5 cm from the outer edge of the coat and collar, then very carefully trimmed the edge. The edges will fray slightly then stop at the stitching. Any threads that are too long will be trimmed back.

I added flaps to the pockets and adjuster straps to the cuffs and back. The pockets, flaps and satraps have been treated in the same way; the edges stitched and then trimmed to fray. I did this before attaching to the coat.

The dimensions for the cuff straps before trimming were 20 cm x 4 cm. I added a buttonhole at one end and once trimmed inserted the other end of the strap into the underarm seam, 4cm from the finished cuff. The button is positioned just before the back sleeve seam.

The back strap dimensions were 26 cm x 4.5 cm. I stitched a buttonhole at each end of the strap and buttons have been attached at the back waist so that the back is slightly gathered.
