The Atelier Shirt with elasticated hem and sleeves

On the back of this season’s popularity for bomber jacket styling I thought I’d try this variation to The Atelier Shirt.
I chose the gathered back option and the straight sleeve – for a fuller sleeve you could always select the gathered sleeve.

I made the following pattern alterations: I shortened the back and front by 3cm/1¼” and the sleeve by 20cm/8” omitting the cuff and placket.
I made up the shirt as instructed except for the cuff and hem where I used 36mm/1½“ elastic.

I folded the hem by 1cm and pressed, then a further 4cm and pressed.
The elastic starts 10cm from the centre front as worn. On the inside of the shirt I placed elastic on the 4cm pressed line, 10cm from the centre front and stitched the end in place to secure. I attached the other end of the elastic to the other front mirroring the position and stitched that end to secure. I then stitched the channel to hold the elastic in place – I did not carry the stitching across to the centre front.
I positioned the buttons so that the flat section remain flat and the elastic sits well when the shirt is worn.
The sleeve cuff is simply turned and stitched to accommodate the elastic.

The gathering on the back adds fullness, this could be lessened or even removed just use the straight back option depending on the look you desire.

The finished garment makes a great sporty summer shirt. The fabric is cotton poplin.
