The design of The Tie Front Cardigan Coat

Scarf coats and jackets have been growing in popularity and our latest pattern is influenced by this trend.

The Tie Front Cardigan Coat is a simple to make style suitable for less experienced makers. It has a slightly dropped shoulder with a scarf extension forming the tie collar. There are options for patch pockets or in-seam if you prefer a clean look. If making with the in-seam pockets, select a lightweight cotton fabric for the pocket bags as boiled and washed wool fabrics are too bulky.

The garment is fastened with a single large snap fastener at the neck and then the tie is simply looped over its self.

This style has been designed especially to be made in boiled or washed wool. Unlike some jersey fabrics boiled and washed wools hold their shape making it much easier to stitch with, so great for beginners. Also through the finishing processes that creates the ‘boiled or washed’ effect, these fabrics do not fray, making it ideal for raw-edged garments.

This style has raw edges at the hem and cuffs and also around three of the patch pocket edges. Depending on the fabric chosen this style is either a cardigan or a lightweight coat.

For a cardigan style, as shown in cream here, look for a wool and viscose mix. These fabrics tend to be lighter, smoother and more fluid when worn.

The washed or boiled 100% wools are generally thicker in weight and more rigid. Their greater warmth makes them more suitable for outer garments as shown here in blue.

You may find the tie length a little too long for heavier boiled or washed wools. However make up the garment as instructed, and once the completed garment is put on and tied, then decide whether to trim it. You may also find that you will trim one side longer than the other so that it looks right when worn. This is the case with the blue garment.

This style is also suitable for finer brushed jersey fabrics. The charcoal grey garment above is made from a lightweight brushed jersey of mixed synthetic fibres.

It has far less structure but the advantage is it can also be worn loose.

Whichever fabric weight you choose this is a cosy cover-up for cooler days.
