The Smock Dress
The Summer 21 magazine pattern is for The Smock Top but it also makes a lovely summer dress.
To make the dress as shown extend the front and back pattern pieces by 51cm or 20” this will give you a finished length of 110cm or 43”.
To add simple inseam pockets. Draw your pocket shape as shown on pattern paper and cut out 2 pairs. Attach a pocket piece to each side of the front and back dress pieces 28cm or 11” from the underarm seam. When you stitch the side seams simply stitch around the pockets too.
The smocking technique is taken from the Fabric Manipulation book by Ruth Singer. As mentioned in the magazine the smocking can be lowered to create a different dress silhouette to suit your shape.
The dress takes an additional metre or yard more than the Smock Top.
