Four words: “I love this pattern”. On a recent trip to Vienna I called into a super fabric store (Komolka Stoffe) and fell in love with too many pieces to bring home in my suitcase. Two of the fabric pieces, the navy Jacquard (16% Viscose, 81% Polyester, 3% Elastane) and the pink Boucle ((13% Wool’ 76% , Polyamid 11% Polyester) were earmarked for this top.
The Pattern: I decided to lengthen the shortest version of the pattern as I have a long torso. I added 4 cm to the pattern. The sleeves were the correct length for me. Although I have bought several Maker’s Atelier patterns this was my first make. The pattern was simple to trace off and adjust. Sewing instructions were straightforward to follow however as the fabrics were a bit different to those specified in the pattern my way of finishing off differed for the pink boucle top. Navy Jacquard: I was conscious of pattern matching when cutting out and spent some time working on this before finally touching my scissors. I reckon this was time well spent as it gives the garment a ‘high end’ feel. Even with the forethought at the cutting out stage, the top was constructed in an afternoon. I stabilised the neckline prior to adding on the collar piece (which by the way fit perfectly). Rather than hand stitch to finish the collar I decided to carefully machine stitch it with no adverse effects. Due to the type of fabric I was able to leave the edges raw.
Pink Boucle: Cutting out was less of a challenge and again, the top sewed up beautifully. To prevent the garment from fraying I decided to make a feature of the seams by top stitching them all. This added a little weight at all of the seams and has possibly improved the drape of the garment (given the light-weight nature of the fabric). As with the Navy top I stitched the neckline to stabilise it prior to adding on the collar and then carefully machine stitched to finish. Result: I have two beautiful tops that drape superbly. The raglan sleeve works so well on the style. I am very happy that I added the extra length – it was simple to do and worked so well for me. I am looking forward to wearing them when the weather warms up a bit. I can see myself making more of these tops.
Fabric and Trim Suggestions
Most jersey constructions. Choose viscose and silk jerseys for the tunic length and boiled wool, cotton terry or micro-fleece for the shorter length.
