A Flared / Holiday Shirt Hybrid

I love the neatness of The Flared Shirt’s shoulder line and of course the flare that gives this style its name. However with my broad shoulders The Holiday Shirt is much more my style, but I wanted the airiness of the flare for this hot weather. 

So I thought I’d try taking elements of The Flared Shirt and add them to The Holiday Shirt to create a hybrid. I especially like the lower V opening at the neck and also the bracelet length sleeve with turned cuff and then add some flare.

The V opening was simple enough, I just lowered the stitch point on the front and lengthened the facing to match.

For the sleeve I used the long sleeve of The Holiday Shirt but made the pattern piece sides parallel from about 4cm down form underarm – as above.

Adding the flare was trickier. The flare in The Flared Shirt is from the centre out not just an addition to the side seam.

So taking The Holiday Shirt pattern I slashed from the shoulder midpoint down to the hem adding 5cm at the hem on each front, then the same on the back from each shoulder midpoint – a total of 20cm added in to the hem circumference.

The finished garment has the desired roomy effect, although its not as elegant as The Flared Shirt.

To balance this new shape out, it works best when worn with a slim silhouette on the bottom half. Here I've paired it with The Ultimate Pencil Skirt in a stretch Milano jersey. 

For a "holiday in Capri" look, team with the side fastening Classic Trouser.

For a more dressy look it could be worn with a statement skirt. This was a version of the woven Ultimate Pencil Skirt made with an over layer of guipure lace in contrasting navy.
